1 2 3 Summary >
Rebel 9 is the latest and greatest in the impressive series of strong
programs released by well-known Dutch chess programmer Ed Schroeder. It
can quickly be characterized as being a very strong and active chess engine
in a somewhat old-fashioned layout.
Its evaluation function is one of the most careful and modest I've seen
so far. In many programs, a "+2,00" advantage may not mean much, but in
Rebel 9 this is an almost certain sign that you're only wasting your time
if you don't resign. :) The great chess knowledge (especially in the endgame),
together with its preference for 32 bit CPU's like the Pentium Pro,
provide for a Louguet II result of 2530 and helped Rebel 9 reclaim a top
2 position of the SSDF list, just like its predecessor had achieved before.
While its chess playing features are undisputed, it lacks quite a bit
in the way it presents them to the user.
The good news is that the "super war-room" window gives you a deep insight
into Rebel's thinking process, from actual, average and maximum ply depth
over top 4 PV's to the number of hash hits and the percentage of hash fill
degree.
