Read my comments about ELO and TPR.

ELO Ratings

I usually make use of the term "ELO rating" in a rather sloppy way. The ratings on this page are a mixture of the ratings determined by the SSDF, my estimates as to how these ratings found on a P5-90 relate to my P6-200, and the Louguet II test results. I neither claim these are actual "ELO ratings" as compared to performance against humans nor that they are an accurate measure of relative playing strength between the programs.

TPR Ratings

The tournament performance rating (TPR) is determined using the program "Chaos" on the Amiga for Tourney III. Since Tourney IV, Swiss Perfect is used.

Rules and regulations

Tourrnaments

  • The rules for a tournament must be specified before the first game has been played and may not be altered during a game with the following exceptions:
  • In a KO tourney, the number of games per round may be changed before the first game of each round has been played.
  • In a RR or Swiss, the number of rounds may be increased if there are at least 2 rounds left to play.
  • In a RR or Swiss, the number of rounds may be decreased if at most half of the rounds have been played and at least 2 rounds will still be played after decreasing the number of rounds.
  • Under special circumstances, the TD can declare a tournament finished; in that case, all remaining games must be scored as draws.
  • Ties for first place must be resolved in the order 1) to 6) as specified below. If more than 2 programs are tied for #1, the tie-breakers 2) to 6) must be applied iteratively until only 2 programs remain tied. Tie-breaker 7) can be applied at the TD's discretion.
  • Ties for 2nd place must be resolved in the order 2) to 6) as specified below. If more than 2 programs are tied for #1, the tie-breakers 2) to 6) must be applied iteratively. Tie-breaker 7) can be applied at the TD's discretion.
  • Ties for 3rd place or higher can, at the TD's discretion, be resolved in the order 3) to 6) as specified below or remain tied. Tie-breaker 7) can be applied at the TD's discretion.
  • Tie-breakers to be applied are, in this order:
    1) Playoff
    2) Direct comparison
    3) Sonneborn-Berger points (Median Buchholz in Swiss tourneys)
    4) Number of wins
    5) Rating performance
    6) Sum of opponents' ratings
    7) Coin flip

  • Games

  • A game is called a win if
  • one program is checkmated or
  • one program resigns or
  • one program announces it will checkmate and the opponent agrees it will get checkmated or
  • both programs agree for 3 moves in a row that one side is
    a) +3 or more up at 40/120 or
    b) +5 or more up at 30/game or
    c) +10 or more up at 10/game
    (exceptions at the TD's discretion).
This rule does not apply if the winning side has less than 10 minutes on the clock unless the win is very obvious.
  • A game is called a draw if
  • it is a draw by 3-fold repetition or
  • it is a draw by the 50 move rule or
  • both programs agree for 3 moves in a row that the score is +0,00 or
  • the game is obviously a dead draw, with both programs shuffling pieces around for at least 20 successive moves without any apparent plan or progress or
  • a program with access to endgame tablebases announces a draw while it is down on material (e.g. a KP vs. KR situation) or
  • one program offers a draw and the other one accepts
  • A game is to be restarted only if one of the following conditions holds:
  • a program sees one side up by +1.00 or more on either one's first move out of book when the tournament is labelled as "book-corrective"
  • one of the conditions in the "power failure" section below is met
  • All programs must play with the same settings during the whole tournament. This includes choice of opening book, opening strategy, playing style, hashtable size and external resources (e.g. tablebases). Exceptions to this rule are:
  • a setting is discovered to be set erroneously, causing the program to play much weaker in which case the TD decides whether to
    a) reset the setting to default and continue the game or
    b) replay the game from scratch.
  • endgame tablebases may be added (but not deleted) during the tournament
  • In case of a power failure, program failure, system crash, operator mistake or similar event, the game must be continued where it broke off, with clock settings restored, if that is technically possible. If necessary, the clocks must be reset to an appropriate time (e.g. to "60 min/game" if both programs had about one hour left on the clock at the moment of interruption).
If the game score can be partially recovered, the game must be continued from the last recovered position, with clocks set to an approximately correct time.
If recovery of the game score is not possible, the game has to be repeated from scratch.
Games are scored "as is", i.e. it is not permitted to replay or nullify games unless a wrong setup for one program is discovered before the first move out of book has been made.
